The Nigeria President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has finally addressed the nation after day 3 of the EndBadGovernance Protest.
The Nationwide protest which started on the 1st of August 2024, was in response to the hardship experienced by Citizens of Nigeria.
Here are 10 key Points from Tinubu’s speech regarding the #EndBadGovernance protest.
- Condolences and Call for Peace: The President expressed sorrow over lives lost during the protests and called for an end to violence.
“I sympathize with the families and relatives of those killed in the protests. Tinubu added, “We must put an end to further bloodshed, violence, and destruction.”
- Protest Suspension: Tinubu asked protesters to call off further demonstrations and instead engage in discussion. He continued: “I hereby enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue.”
- Economic Reforms: The President justified his decision to eliminate fuel subsidies and modify the foreign currency system, claiming that these steps were required to “reverse decades of economic mismanagement.”
Tinubu highlighted economic success, adding, “Aggregate government revenues have more than doubled, hitting over N9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023.”
- Infrastructure Development: The President emphasized the ongoing major construction projects, including as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Highway.
Tinubu announced a rise in oil production to 1.61 million barrels per day, reviving investor interest in the sector.
- Compressed Natural Gas project: The government announced a CNG project to power transportation and save expenses, with intentions to distribute a million conversion kits.
