A law passed in Nigeria in March stipulates that newly inaugurated presidents and governors must appoint their respective ministers and commissioners within 60 days of taking office.

President Bola Tinubu and several governors, both new and re-elected, were sworn in on May 29, 2023.

According to section 42 of the Nigerian constitution, “the nomination of any person to the office of a minister for confirmation by the senate shall be done within 60 days after the date the president has taken the oath of office.”

With 58 days into their tenure, these leaders face a July 28 deadline to submit their cabinet lists to the legislative body. Early this morning, President Tinubu sent his ministerial list to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

While some states have successfully appointed their cabinet members, others are yet to complete their selections.

Twelve states have sent the list of cabinet members to the legislature.

The states include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Delta, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Rivers, Oyo and Taraba.

The states that are yet to forward a list of cabinet members to legislature include, Sokoto, Enugu, Cross River, Plateau, Niger, Lagos, Ogun, Kwara, Borno, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Benue, Zamfara, Yobe and Gombe.
