Naomi Osaka fought from going a set behind to win her second US open title, beating Victoria Azarenka 1-6 6-3 6-3.
The 22 year old Japan international, as a reward for lifting a third career grand slam, also won the £2.3million prize money.
She also became the first Asian since Li Na to win three major titles.
Aside from her rapper boyfriend Cordae, the Japanese icon latest victory came without the usual audience as a result of safety measures put in place to halt the coronavirus pandemic.
Belarusian, Azarenka, starting on her first grand slam final in seven years, came out like a woman on fire racing to a first set victory in under 26 minutes.
She soon began fading away as a few errors allowed Osaka back in slowly and she never looked back after winning the second set.
Speaking in the aftermath of her latest victory, she said, “I just thought it would be very embarrassing to lose in under an hour so I just have to try and stop having a really bad attitude.”
