GoldenNewsNg gathered that University of Benin [Uniben] closedown immediately after students protest fees increase outside campus.
Uniben Vice Chancellor Prof. Lilian Imuentinyan Salami has approve the immediate closure of the University in Edo state, southern Nigeria.
Uniben Students blocked the major Lagos-Benin expressway to protest increase in school fees on Tuesday September 15, 2021.
According to the Vice Chancellor in a statement signed by the Registrar the decision to close the school due to consultation is in the best interest of the general student body.
The move is based on security reports to avoid hoodlums hijacking the student protest, so it doesn’t lead to breakdown of law and order.
The Vice chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami has ordered all students to vacate the hostels and University premises not later than 12 noon on Wednesday 15th, September, 2021.
She also added that the school fee increment that led to the protest will be duly reviewed
Cause of Uniben students protest?
University of Benin students protest the N20,000 school management added to the school fees as penalty for late payment.
For the Ekheuan campus of the institution, the students blocked the road to protest against what is called ; “indiscriminate increment of their school fees.“
While the Benin-Lagos Expressway was also blocked for hours on Tuesday by the protesting students.
The students carried placards with different write-ups like Federal Uni don turn BOWEN’, ‘UNIBEN no be BOWEN, urgent 20k no be our budget’.
Other placrads read: ‘Oppression comes in different forms’, and ‘We didn’t sign for this injustice’, and played solidarity songs with public address system.
