NURSES SALARY STRUCTURE BY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

A Nurse with less than two years of experience makes approximately 96,400 NGN per month while someone with an experience level between two and five years is expected to earn 128,000 NGN per month.

A Nurse with an experience level between five and ten years goes home with a salary of 171,000 NGN per month

Nurses with experience between ten and fifteen years get a salary equivalent to 203,000 NGN per month. If the experience level is between fifteen and twenty years, then the expected wage is 219,000 NGN per month. A Nurse with more than twenty years of professional experience gets a salary of 236,000 NGN per month.

Nurses Salary in Government Hospitals/Teaching Hospitals

  • Entry level (0 – 2 years’ experience): N70, 000 – N90, 000 (Only few hospitals pay more than this)
  • Mid-Level (2 – 5 years): N90, 000 – N110, 000
  • Experienced (5 years and above): N100, 000 – N150, 000

NURSES SALARY STRUCTURE BASED ON EDUCATIONAL LEVEL

It is a known fact that if you have to earn more, you must learn more. So to say that the higher the educational qualification, the more you will earn. So, you might be wondering how much getting an extra degree can add to your income.

When the education level is Bachelor’s Degree, the average salary of a Nurse is 227,000 NGN per month while someone with a Master’s Degree gets a salary of 358,000 NGN per month. This is about 58% more than a Nurse who has a Bachelor’s degree.

A Master’s degree program or any post-graduate program in Nigeria takes a lot of finance but if you can afford it the return on investment is worth it. You should be able to recover the costs in roughly a year or more.

NURSES SALARY COMPARISON BY GENDER

In Nigeria, a lot of people still hold on to the opinion that Nursing is a profession for females but unlike in other countries the fact is nursing has never been an only female profession. Males are embracing the profession more in recent times. While gender should not affect pay, in reality, it does as females earn more. Male Nurses in Nigeria earn 6% less than their female counterparts on average.

On average, male Nurses in Nigeria earn 255,000 NGN while female Nurses earn 273,000 NGN every month.

Having seen these factors, a person working as a Nurse in Nigeria typically earns around 265,000 NGN per month. Salaries range from 133,000 NGN (lowest) to 411,000 NGN (highest). This is the average monthly Nurses Salary In Nigeria (2022) including housing, transport, and other benefits.

Nurses are also  entitled to several bonuses and allowances

They are also dependent on the level of experience. For instance, senior-level nurses earn more than entry-level nurses and have better bonuses and allowances. Generally, the salary structure for Nurses is based on two main standards: Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) which is for hospitals, and Consolidated University Academic structure (CONAUSS) for Nurses in the academic sector.

Nurses Are Entitled To Several Bonuses And Allowances Such As;

Call Duty Allowance: This allowance is for health professionals working in Federal hospitals or medical centers. If you have performed a call duty which is always recorded on the call duty card then you should be paid your call duty allowance.

Specialist Allowance: This allowance is for healthcare professionals who have attained the position of consultant. There are not many specialist nursing professionals in Nigeria and as such the existing healthcare specialist should be paid well.

Shift Duty Allowance: This is paid to nurses and health workers that run shifts (Night and day).

Clinical Duty Allowance: This allowance is paid to academic staff in the university who render clinical services in the teaching hospital as consultants.

Non-Clinical Duty Allowance: This allowance is paid to all health professionals that offer health services in the Federal Ministry of Health or Federal Health institutions.

Teaching Allowance: This allowance is paid specifically to Nurses that teach health professionals at the federal teaching hospital or a medical center. Hazard allowance and Rural posting allowance are also paid to eligible Nurses.

How to Become a Nurse in Nigeria

Be Certified: It is essential you get necessary certificate if you want to be a recognized nurse in Nigeria. You are expected to have the compulsory SSCE certificate with at least a credit pass in the major science course including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. You then strive to be admitted in a Nursing school or University. Typically, the duration for the nursing program is 3 years in Nursing school and 5 years in the University. You will get an associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a bachelor’s degree (BSN)

Internship: At the end of the program, you will be posted for a compulsory 1-year internship in a hospital where you will practise as a nurse and have the opportunity to relate with other professional nurses.

National Youth Service Corps: NYSC is a one-year service year where you are expected to serve your motherland. Ideally, you will be posted to a hospital in the area you are posted to.
