FCT, Abuja – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has confirmed it is in discreet discussions with former President Goodluck Jonathan over a possible presidential bid in the 2027 general elections.
A principal member of the ADC, speaking to The Punch on Sunday, August 10, revealed that talks with Jonathan have been ongoing and described the former president’s feedback as encouraging.
“We are talking to him, and we are getting a positive response so far. I can assure you he is not going to contest under the PDP; he knows the problem there. Does he want to wrestle with Nyesom Wike who has the grip on the party? The former president is a gentleman and a refined politician,” the source said.
According to the chieftain, Jonathan has met with coalition leaders at least three times, expressing appreciation for their efforts to “rescue the country from the current economic quagmire occasioned by President Bola Tinubu’s bad policies.”
When asked whether Jonathan would be offered an automatic ticket, the party official replied, “When we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it.”
Jonathan, who governed Nigeria as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2010 to 2015, has so far remained tight-lipped about his political plans.
In July, an opposition coalition formally adopted the ADC as its platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. The coalition boasts a roster of high-profile figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, Bukola Saraki, Rotimi Amaechi, and Abubakar Malami.
