Why is the Third Mainland Bridge Closing? The closure is primarily for repairs. Sections of the bridge have deteriorated, resulting in potholes and bumps that have raised safety concerns. The Federal Controller of Works, Engr O. I. Kesha, acknowledges the need for comprehensive repairs. To begin addressing these concerns, a 24-hour closure has been scheduled.

What Are the Alternative Routes? During the closure, it’s essential to plan your travel using alternative routes:

  1. From Lagos-Ibadan Expressway or Alapere/Ogudu Axis: You’ll be redirected towards the Gbagada-Oshodi expressway, where you can access Ikorodu Road and Funsho Williams Avenue. This route will lead you to the Eko Bridge and Lagos Island.
  2. Traveling from Lagos Mainland via Herbert Macaulay Road: If you’re heading towards Lagos Island via the Third Mainland Bridge, you’ll be diverted to Muritala Mohammed Way. From there, you can utilize the Carter Bridge to reach Lagos Island.

When Will the Closure Occur? The Third Mainland Bridge will be closed from Saturday, October 21, 2023, to Sunday, October 22, 2023. This 24-hour period will facilitate the palliative works required to improve the bridge’s condition.

Can Water Transportation Be an Option? Certainly! Lagos boasts an intricate network of water routes, offering fast, convenient, and safe transportation alternatives. Consider using a jetty service during the bridge closure to make your commute more efficient.

Traffic Management and Your Role As you navigate these alternative routes during the closure, cooperation with traffic management officials is vital. Please adhere to diversions and obey instructions to ensure a smooth traffic flow during this period.

The closure of the Third Mainland Bridge is a necessary step to address safety concerns and carry out essential repairs. By understanding the reasons behind the closure and utilizing alternative routes, you can make your commute more manageable. And don’t forget, water transportation offers a unique and efficient way to get around Lagos during this time.

As always, stay informed, stay safe, and be part of a solution to alleviate traffic congestion during this maintenance period.
