There are concerns that university workers, represented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), may be preparing for another clash with the federal government. This stems from issues surrounding members’ welfare, working conditions, among other grievances.
The disappointment is palpable regarding President Bola Tinubu’s failure to fulfill promises, including the release of eight months’ withheld salaries resulting from the 2022 industrial action, as well as the six-month N35,000 wage award and salary review.
ASUU expresses frustration with the government’s failure to honor agreements, emphasizing a lack of implementation since the current administration assumed office. Despite assurances from Tinubu, no significant action has been taken to address ASUU’s grievances.
Despite promises made by Tinubu to ensure cooperation with academic unions and prevent future strikes, ASUU members continue to face challenges. The partial waiver of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy has been approved, but concerns persist over withheld salaries and other unresolved issues.
ASUU is engaging in nationwide consultations with members, highlighting the government’s failure to implement agreements and the resulting hardships faced by university staff. The union is considering its next steps, with grievances including withheld salaries and failure to address core issues.
