Also, big trucks, buses, and machines use diesel. This means there is always a need for diesel in Nigeria. If you want to start this business, you are making a good choice. But before you start, you need to understand how it works and what to do to succeed.

In this blog post, I will explain step by step how to start a diesel supply business in Nigeria.

What is Diesel Supply Business

The diesel supply business means buying diesel from oil marketers and selling it to companies, factories, hotels, hospitals, schools, and other places that need it. Some people also supply diesel to homes that use big generators.

Diesel is different from petrol. Petrol is used for small cars and bikes, while diesel is used for bigger machines, trucks, and generators. Because many businesses in Nigeria depend on diesel, the demand is always high. This makes it a good business for anyone who wants to make money.

Why Diesel Business is Profitable in Nigeria

1. High Demand – Many businesses and people need diesel every day because of poor electricity.
2. Steady Market – The demand for diesel does not stop. As long as there is no steady power in Nigeria, people will keep buying diesel.
3. Good Profit Margin – You can make good profit because you buy at a lower price and sell at a higher price.
4. Different Customers – Many industries, companies, and individuals need diesel. You can sell to different kinds of people.

Now that you know why this business is good, let’s talk about how to start it.

Steps to Start Diesel Supply Business in Nigeria

Now that you know why this business is good, let’s talk about how to start it.

Step 1: Learn About the Diesel Business

Before you start this business, you need to learn how it works. You cannot just wake up and start selling diesel without knowing the right steps to take. Learning about the business will help you avoid mistakes and losses. You need to know where to buy diesel at the best price, how to transport it safely, and how to store it if necessary. You also need to learn about the laws and rules of the business to avoid legal problems.

One of the best ways to learn is by talking to people who are already in the business. They can tell you about the challenges they face and how they solve them. You can also visit a diesel depot to see how things work. Another way to learn is by doing research online and reading about the business. The more knowledge you have, the easier it will be for you to succeed.

Step 2: Get Capital (Money to Start)

You need money to start this business because diesel is expensive. The amount of money you need depends on how big you want to start. If you want to start small, you can begin with one or two trucks of diesel. But if you want to start big, you may need more trucks and a storage facility.

There are different ways to get money for this business. If you have savings, you can use that. If your savings are not enough, you can take a loan from a bank. Some people also ask family and friends to invest in their business. Another option is to partner with someone who has money but does not know how the business works. You can manage the business while they provide the capital.

Step 3: Choose the Type of Diesel Business You Want

There are different ways to run a diesel supply business, and you need to decide which one you want to do. Some people sell diesel in small quantities to homes and small businesses. This is called retail supply. If you choose this option, you may not need a lot of capital to start. You can deliver small amounts of diesel to customers using a small truck or even a generator fuel container.

Another option is wholesale supply, where you sell diesel in large quantities to companies, factories, and industries. This type of business requires more capital because you need to buy diesel in bulk and transport it to different locations. Some people also go into the tanker business, where they transport diesel from depots to different customers. If you choose this option, you need a tanker truck, and you must follow safety regulations.

Step 4: Register Your Business

It is important to register your business so that you can operate legally. Many big companies only buy from registered businesses, so registering will help you get more customers. The first step is to register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). This makes your business official, and you can open a business bank account.

You also need to get approval from the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) because diesel is a petroleum product. They will give you a license to operate. Another thing you need is a Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the tax office. This helps you pay your taxes properly and avoid problems with the government.

Step 5: Get a Good Supplier

Finding a good supplier is very important in this business. If you buy diesel at a high price, you may not make a good profit. If you buy bad diesel, customers will not trust you. That is why you need to buy from a reliable supplier. The best places to buy diesel in Nigeria are NNPC depots and private depots in Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt, and Calabar.

When choosing a supplier, look at their price, quality, and how fast they deliver. Some suppliers sell at lower prices, but their diesel may be bad. Selling bad diesel can damage generators and machines, and you may lose customers. So, always choose quality over price.

Step 6: Get a Diesel Storage Tank or Truck

If you want to store diesel before selling, you need a strong storage tank. The tank should be in a safe location where trucks can load diesel easily. It must also meet safety requirements to avoid accidents.

If you do not want to store diesel, you can buy or rent a tanker truck. Some people prefer renting a truck because it costs less than buying. The truck will help you transport diesel directly to your customers. If you choose this option, make sure the truck is in good condition to avoid breakdowns.

Step 7: Get Customers for Your Diesel Business

To make money in this business, you must find people who will buy diesel from you. Some of the best customers are hotels, schools, hospitals, factories, banks, shopping malls, and telecom companies. These businesses need diesel every day, and they usually buy in large quantities.

You can find customers by visiting these businesses and telling them about your service. You can also use social media and websites to advertise. Some people print business cards and flyers to give to potential customers. The key is to build good relationships so that customers keep buying from you.

Step 8: Set Your Price and Make Profit

To make a profit, you need to set the right price for your diesel. First, calculate how much you bought it, including transportation and other costs. Then, add your profit margin before selling.

Your price should not be too high, or customers will go to your competitors. It should also not be too low, or you will not make enough profit. The best way to set your price is to check the market and see what others are charging. This will help you remain competitive while still making money.

Zulum Approves ₦300,000 Support Package, Free Meals, and Scholarships for Borno Students

Residents of a Lagos estate were left in shock on Thursday night after a young woman, Deborah Porsche, popularly known as Debporsche, was allegedly murdered by her ex-boyfriend, identified simply as Lintex, nearly a year after their breakup. According to reports, Lintex had repeatedly threatened Deborah since their split in August 2024, allegedly vowing: “If I don’t have you, nobody will. If I no marry you, blood go flow.” Deborah’s sister described her as a hardworking interior decorator who had just completed her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). She further alleged that the deceased endured emotional abuse throughout her relationship with Lintex, which ultimately pushed her to walk away. On the night of the attack, the suspect disguised himself as a dispatch rider in an attempt to infiltrate the estate. Security guards reportedly stopped him at the gate, but he scaled the fence and gained entry to Deborah’s apartment. Eyewitnesses said Lintex first tampered with the gas cylinder line outside the apartment, allegedly trying to cause an explosion. When that failed, he forced his way inside and stabbed Deborah multiple times with a knife he brought along. Alarmed neighbours rushed to the scene and alerted the police. The suspect was subdued and handed over to law enforcement officers. Police authorities have confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing. Deborah’s tragic death has sparked outrage online and renewed calls for stronger legal protections for women against abusive and obsessive partners.
