What to Do When Your JAMB Exam Score is Low

This is a guide on what to do if your JAMB score is below 180. In particular, I will now outline the steps to take if you score below 150.

(1) Check the list of universities that accept low JAMB scores

The first step is to check the previous JAMB cut-off mark for each University, and that will give you a clue to Universities and Polytechnics that accept low JAMB scores.

(2) Go for a change of course/institution

My friend, who was offered admission in 2020, took advantage of the opportunity provided by JAMB to do a change of course or institution. He switched from UNIPORT to LAUTECH after discovering that LAUTECH accepts scores below 190 for some courses.

The change of course/institution option is a real lifesaver when you realize your JAMB score is below the cut-off mark of your preferred school. It’s a smart move to make in order to avoid wasting your score.

However, you may have to consider courses or institutions you didn’t originally plan for. For example, someone who scored 190 and wanted to study Medicine might need to switch to Biology in a university that accepts candidates with scores below 180.

In some cases, you may even have to consider switching from a university to a polytechnic in order to secure admission.

(3) Prepare well for post-UTME

This only comes into play when you’ve met the cut-off mark. However, meeting the cut-off mark does not automatically guarantee admission. To increase your chances, you need to perform well in the Post-UTME.

Many institutions combine your JAMB score, Post-UTME score, and O’Level results to determine who gets admitted. That’s why it’s important to start preparing early to boost your overall score and secure your spot.

Nigerian universities accepting 140, 150, 160 JAMB scores

With all the controversy surrounding the low pass rate in the 2025 UTME conducted by JAMB, it’s no surprise that many students across the country are feeling anxious and uncertain about what to do next.

A lot of candidates had high hopes of getting into top universities this year, so the poor results have come as a big disappointment. Now, with cut-off marks likely to be affected and competition getting even tougher, students are beginning to rethink their options.

Many are now looking into alternative schools and courses they may not have considered before, just to make sure they don’t miss out entirely on gaining admission.

As the admission season draws closer, questions about which schools to apply to, which courses are more realistic, and how catchment areas might play a role are becoming more common, especially among worried parents and students.

This uncertainty has created a sense of urgency. Everyone is scrambling to find a school or course that matches their JAMB score and still aligns with their career goals, even if it means adjusting expectations a little.

According to reports online, the following universities will accept JAMB scores as low as 140:
