NELFUND Raises Alarm Over 21 Fake Facebook Pages Impersonating Its Student Loan Platform

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has issued a public disclaimer, warning Nigerians to avoid engaging with 21 fake Facebook pages impersonating the organisation.

GoldenNewsNg reports that the warning was contained in an official notice signed by the Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, on behalf of the Fund.

According to the statement, NELFUND listed 21 fraudulent Facebook links currently being circulated online. The agency warned that these pages were created to deceive the public by posing as official NELFUND platforms.

NELFUND clarified that it operates only one verified Facebook page and shared the official link:

The Fund stated that any other page claiming to represent the agency is unauthorized and should be reported immediately.

NELFund Urges Public to Avoid Fake Pages

The agency urged Nigerians to avoid following or sharing content from the fake accounts. It also advised the public not to disclose any personal information on such platforms, warning that doing so could expose users to scams, identity theft, or cyber fraud.

NELFUND reiterated that all verified information, including student loan updates and application procedures, will only be shared on its official website and approved social media handles.

The Fund also confirmed that it is working with relevant authorities to track and shut down the fake accounts. It called on Nigerians to support these efforts by reporting suspicious pages or misleading content.

What You Should Know

As of June 28, 2025, NELFUND has disbursed over ₦73.1 billion in student loans to 366,247 Nigerian students across 206 tertiary institutions since the loan portal launched on May 24, 2024.

Breakdown:

  • ₦38.26 billion covered institutional fees

  • ₦34.85 billion paid as monthly upkeep to students

Additional data from NELFUND’s Student Loan Disbursement Dashboard shows:

  • 647,269 students registered

  • 611,018 successful applications, representing a 94% application success rate

Between June 27 and June 28 alone, the platform recorded:

  • 1,316 new successful registrants

  • 1,387 new successful applications

The report also noted that 105% of new registrants completed their applications during the reporting period, reflecting the improved responsiveness of the loan processing system.
