Court orders prosecution of auxiliary nurse linked to Mohbad’s death

The Coroner’s Court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to prosecute Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to the late Afrobeats singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, before his death.

Delivering her ruling, Magistrate C.A. Shotobi stated that Ogedengbe was neither a registered nurse nor a licensed medical practitioner, and therefore acted unlawfully by administering a tetanus injection, which reportedly led to complications resulting in Mohbad’s death.

“Pursuant to Section 29 of the Coroner Laws of Lagos State, this court recommends the prosecution of the unlicensed medical personnel, Felicia Ogedengbe, by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, for unlawful medical practice and gross negligence,” the Magistrate ruled.

Regulatory and Institutional Failures Highlighted

The coroner expressed serious concern over regulatory lapses in the health sector, which allowed unqualified individuals to operate as healthcare providers. The court also criticized the Nigeria Police Force for failing to act on a petition filed by Mohbad prior to his death, which accused music industry figures Naira Marley and Sam Larry of assault and intimidation.

Magistrate Shotobi ordered an investigation into the police’s inaction, calling on relevant authorities to determine whether official negligence played a role.

Family Actions Also Under Scrutiny

The coroner further faulted Mohbad’s father for authorizing a hasty burial without first conducting an autopsy. Additionally, the court questioned Mohbad’s wife for choosing to treat him at home instead of seeking urgent medical help at a hospital.

Background

Mohbad, a rising 27-year-old Afrobeats star, died under unclear circumstances on September 12, 2023. His death sparked widespread public outcry and prompted the Lagos State Government to launch a special investigation team to determine the cause of death.

Known for his lyrical depth and unique sound, Mohbad had quickly risen to prominence, building a loyal fanbase across Nigeria and beyond before his untimely death.
