The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

This declaration is part of the ongoing national mourning period announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, following the death of Buhari. The mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13, is scheduled to last seven days, with all national flags to be flown at half-mast across the country.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, the Honourable Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, confirmed the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government. According to him, the declaration followed the approval of President Tinubu.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served this country with dedication, integrity, and a strong commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress,” the Minister said. “This holiday is a moment for all Nigerians to pause and reflect on his legacy, leadership, and values.”

Dr. Tunji-Ojo further described the holiday as a mark of deep respect for the former President’s role in Nigeria’s democratic journey and nation-building efforts. He urged citizens to honour Buhari’s memory by embracing peace, promoting patriotism, and upholding national unity.

The Federal Government also extended heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of the former leader’s soul.

As the nation mourns, citizens are encouraged to observe the public holiday with a spirit of reflection and gratitude for the former President’s service to Nigeria.
