Rising Flood Concerns: A Look Back at 2024 and 2025

Flooding remains a recurring disaster in Nigeria, often causing large-scale destruction and loss of lives. In 2024, floods affected 31 states, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries. Over 1.2 million Nigerians were impacted.

In 2025 alone, severe flooding has already wreaked havoc in many communities. The most tragic event occurred in Mokwa, Niger State, in May, where over 200 people lost their lives, and thousands were displaced

What You Should Do

The government has urged residents in at-risk areas to:

  • Stay informed through local weather updates

  • Avoid flood-prone areas and water-logged roads

  • Relocate temporarily if advised

  • Ensure proper drainage around their homes

Stay safe and share this information widely to help save lives.
