DSS has summoned Sowore Over Social Media Post Against the Nigeria President, Tinubu
GoldenNewsNg reports that the Department of State Services (DSS) has ordered activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, to retract what it described as a “false and malicious” social media post against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a letter dated September 7, 2025, signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the Director-General of DSS, Sowore was directed to withdraw his statement on X (formerly Twitter) and issue a public apology within seven days.
The DSS accused Sowore of referring to Tinubu as a “criminal” in a post on August 26, 2025, where he mocked the President’s comments on corruption in Brazil.
According to the Service, the remarks were “repugnant, derogatory and capable of inciting public disturbance,” warning that they could undermine Tinubu’s standing at home and abroad while potentially triggering “disunity, insurrection, or a breakdown of law and order.”
DSS Directives to Sowore
The DSS instructed Sowore to:

Post a retraction on X;

Publish apologies in at least two national newspapers and two television stations;

Send a representation to DSS headquarters in Abuja or via email.
The agency also copied the United States Embassy in Abuja, notifying it of the development.
“Persons of your status who are campaigning to lead this country must exercise restraint and responsibility in their speech,” the DSS stated, warning it would take lawful action if Sowore failed to comply.
The DSS further stressed its mandate to protect Nigerians from false propaganda, adding that it would “explore all lawful means” to counter misinformation that could harm national unity.
