Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has stepped down to pave the way for the appointment of a new substantive chairman. He handed over to National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as acting chairman, ensuring a smooth transition for the commission ahead of upcoming elections in Nigeria.
Yakubu Steps Down to Allow Leadership Transition
On Tuesday, Prof. Yakubu officially resigned as INEC Chairman, citing the need to allow the incoming chairman to settle into office and effectively manage electoral responsibilities in Africa’s largest democracy.
The brief handover ceremony took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, during a regular consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
“Following consultation with other national commissioners, May Agbamuche-Mbu will serve in acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive chairman of the commission,” Yakubu said.
He noted that stepping down now would allow the appointing authorities adequate time to name a new chairman and give the successor a chance to adapt to the role quickly
Reflecting on 10 Years of Service at INEC
Prof. Yakubu highlighted his 10-year tenure at the commission, noting the complexity of Nigeria’s electoral environment.
“I have been privileged to serve the commission for 10 years. I understand the enormity of the challenges ahead, and I hope this decision will facilitate a smooth transition for the new chairman,” he said.
Since 2015, he has worked with 24 national commissioners and 67 RECs, overseeing multiple electoral exercises and reforms aimed at improving transparency and voter confidence.

Yakubu expressed appreciation for the support and collaboration of INEC members, RECs, and staff nationwide.
“I will forever cherish the support of successive secretaries and staff of INEC nationwide. Their professionalism and dedication have been critical to the commission’s work,” he added.
