What Is Juju in Nigeria ?

Juju is another name for black magic, it is a form of power that is made from supernatural or spiritual concoctions to make things happen in the physical realm, as in abnormal things or a type of witchcraft.

These forms of witchcraft are popularly practiced in West African countries, they are common in Togo, Nigeria, Benin Republic and other West African countries.

Juju is based on power and for you to triumph, it has to do with how potent your juju is, and there is this saying that where yours ended is where someone else starts from which simply implies that you do not over-rely on the potency of your own juju as other persons own might be greater than yours.

Basics of how juju came into Existence

Looking at the basics of how juju started, it can be seen that the term first showed up regarding the Priest-Kings of certain towns in West Africa. These people were the traditional rulers that were much inclined on deity local beliefs. In a simple sense, they were additionally Kings and done the parts of both a Priest and a King. This was recorded by Sir James Frazer, who was a powerful Scottish folklorist. Degema is a place found in the present day Rivers State.   1. Esan Tribe (Edo)

The Esan tribe are an ethnic group also with powerful Juju in Nigeria. They are the category of people who speaks the Esan language. They have their local language – the Esan Language. The Esan are generally agriculturalists, trado-clinical experts, mercenary warriors and hunters.

The Esan clan is an old ethnic group of individuals that ruled the present day Edo State in the South-South area of Nigeria. The Esan tribe are generally known for fishing, cultivating, and their practice of traditional deity known as juju. This is seen in their customary ways which incorporates traditional worshipping and blackmagic (Juju).

Brief History of Esan Tribe

The modern Esan nation is believed to have been organized during the 15th century, when citizens, mostly nobles and princes, left the neighbouring Benin Empire for the northeast; there they formed communities and kingdoms called eguares among the aboriginal peoples whom they met there. There are on the whole 35 established kingdoms in Esanland, including Amahor, Ebelle, Egoro, Ewohimi, Ekekhenlen, Ekpoma, Ekpon, Emu, Ewu, Ewatto, Ewossa, Idoa, Ifeku, Igueben, Ilushi, Inyelen, Irrua, Ogwa, Ohordua, Okalo, Okhuesan, Onogholo, Opoji, Oria, Orowa, Uromi, Udo, Ugbegun, Ugboha, Ubiaja, Urhohi, Ugun, Ujiogba, Ukhun, and Uzea.

The Esan Kingdoms often warred among each other. Despite the wars, the Esans kept a homogenous culture which was chiefly influenced by the Benin Empire. However, these kingdoms were colonized, along with the Benin Empire, by the British Empire during September 1897, only gaining independence 63 years later in 1960 when Nigeria became independent from British Colonial rule. After independence, the Esan people have suffered from civil war, poverty, and lack of infrastructure.

2. Ijebu Tribe

As respects to the most powerful juju tribe in Nigeria, the Ijebu tribe of Yoruba is certainly the number one.

It is worthy that Ijebu ranks as the tribe with the most powerful black magic (Juju ) in the country. However, numerous clans can flaunt strong and powerful juju practitioners, as the Dibias for the Igbos, and even the renowned Edo people, but the title of the most grounded juju clan in Nigeria is certain to go to the Ijebu people of Yoruba ethnic group in Ogun state.

Ijebu, or Ijeun Ini Ibu, signifies ‘eating from the most deep ocean’ which likewise implies picking from the most extraordinary products that lie on the sea floor. Even the name of the Ijebu, is equipped for striking apprehension into the hearts of most people in the country. The Ijebu tribe have a rich culture and tradition that is viewed to be valuable and lasting. Brief History of Ijebu Tribe

The kingdom was one of the most developed in the region with a complex and highly organized government. The capital was at Ijebu Ode where the Awujale had his palace. Counterbalancing the Awujale was the Osugbo (known as the Ogboni in other parts of Nigeria), a council of all free born, titled men that acted as the kingdom’s courts. The Osugbo was divided into six groups based on rank, the highest being the iwarefa, whose head the Oliwa was the second most powerful figure in the nation. Also powerful was the Olisa, who could be described as the mayor of Ijebu Ode.

Like many African societies, Ijebu was also divided into three age ranks, and these groups each had their own leaders. The Kingdom is made up of several towns and stretches to parts of Lagos State and borders Ondo State.[3] These towns includes Ijebu-Igbo, Imota, Ikorodu, Epe, Lagos, Ijebu-Isiwo, Ogun Waterside, Iwopin, Lekki in Lagos State, Ijebu-Imushin, Ijebu-Ife, Apunren, Erunwon, Isonyin, Ososa, Odogbolu and Ago-Iwoye.

The Ijebus  are also attributed are the largest ethnic gathering in Nigeria, and they were really the primary people to be taught by western education. Ijebu are said to be the only tribe that has it’s starting points from book of scriptures times and as per Biblical record, the Jebusites, were a Canaanite clan, who possessed and fabricated Jerusalem before it’s success by King David.

Conclusion

There are some other notable tribes in the country which are strongly inclined to juju and traditional customs. Juju is majorly practiced in Nigerian tribes, in spite of the fact that its assumptions are shared by most of the people in the country.

As it is the Ijebus and Esan people are the leading force when it comes to juju in Nigeria but we also have other tribes that are strong too in matters of Juju , expecially the Ijaw people, the Andoni, Oron, Efik, Igbos, Annang and the Yorubas in general.
