Niger state govt vows to prosecute contractors who fail to meet road projects deadline

Niger state government has  vowed to prosecute contractors who fail to meet road projects’ deadline.

As part of efforts to ensure that projects are completed, Niger State Government has over the weekend given directives to contractors handling road projects in Suleja town to complete the works on or before the deadline or face prosecution.

Expressing disappointment at the level of projects abandonment in parts of the State, Chief of Staff to the Governor who is also Head of the State Infrastructure Committee, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe Kagara said “I am very disappointed with what I have seen, and we are not going to accept excuses.”

According to him “I am disappointed at the pace for which these projects are going. You must complete these roads at the stipulated deadline.

“If the roads are fixed, the people will be happy for it and I am sure they have been praying for the government and for you the contractors. But since you have left the roads undone, the people I am sure will be heaping curses, and I know that these curses will bounce to you because it is you who have disappointed us.”

He added when the committee visited some ongoing projects in Suleja that money for compensation has been released to houses affected by the projects.

However, the contractors who refused to speak to our Correspondent assured the government’s team that they will commence work immediately and deliver at the projected deadline.

Also, when contacted, the Director General, Strategic Operation Unit, ICT and Public Enlightenment, Abdulberqi Ebbo said the Committee invited the two contractors of Zariyawa and Jubilee roads to a meeting in Government House this week.

He added that, Governor Abubaka Sani Bello has mandated that all ongoing projects in the State be completed timely and to the highest possible standard.

Others in the Committee include, Commissioners of Justice, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Budget and Planning, Lands and Housing.

Others are Permanent Secretaries Finance, Procurement, Director of Civil, Mininstry of Works, Senior Political Aide Office of the COS and Coodinator Legacy Projects.
