After being found guilty of money laundering, Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has spoken out.

Goldennewsng reports that on Monday evening, he stated on his Twitter account that his adversaries continue to fail.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja found the troubled leader of the Labour Party guilty of violating the Money Laundering Act on Monday. He was then given a sentence of two and a half years in prison or the payment of a fine of N13 million by yesterday at 4:30 p.m. Before the due date, Okupe paid the fine.

The PUNCH previously reported that the presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, offered Okupe the option of paying a fine of N500, 000 for each of the 26 counts against him, which amounted to N13,000,000, for which he was found guilty in a suit brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Okupe being the first defendant.

Okupe would have been sent to the Kuje Correctional Center if he hadn’t paid the fine for all charges before the deadline.

Responding to the court disaster in a tweet on Monday night, Okupe said he’s foes continue falling flat, pronouncing that God is preeminent over man.

“God is not man,” he wrote. The adversaries have attempted many things, but they have failed repeatedly…God has won.

In a tweet earlier today, Okupe added, “lies, fabrication, and disinformation are their tools.” However, they will ultimately fail and suffer shame. Doyin Okupe has not chopped any shishi and has not moved the base one millimeter! We are moving forward until God saves us all from the incessant thieves who are after this lost but glorious ark. Naija.”

Even though the Money Laundering Act said that no one or any organization could receive more than N5 million or N10 million without going through a financial institution, the presiding judge ruled that Okupe was not a financial institution and that, even if the president was said to have authorized the funds, he did not say that the money had to be paid in cash.

Because the prosecution failed to prove the charges of money laundering, criminal breach of trust, and corruption against the NSA, the court found Okupe guilty of counts 34, 35, 36 to 59 and released him from counts 1 to 33.

From 2012 to 2015, while Okupe was Jonathan’s assistant, he was accused of receiving various sums of money totaling N10 million on counts 34 to 59, which led to his conviction.

He claimed that the said sum was used to run his office, pay his staff, and clean up the former President and his administration’s image. The court, on the other hand, decided that receiving such sums in cash was against the Money Laundering Act.

In addition, The PUNCH reported that the leadership of the Labour Party said on Monday that before taking a position on the matter, it would first obtain a copy of the judgment issued by the court that found Okupe, the Director-General of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, guilty and study it.
