On Thursday, thousands of supporters of Senator Albert Bassey Akpan, the Young Democratic Party (YPP) candidate for governor of Akwa Ibom, stormed the streets of Uyo to welcome the politician’s release from prison.
Goldennewsng reports that the Senator was given a 42-year prison term for corruption on December 1, 2022, by an Uyo Federal High Court headed by Justice Agatha Okeke.
Albert was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with receiving exotic cars worth N204 million from Jide Omokare, a contractor for the Akwa Ibom State Government.
However, the Uyo Senatorial District Senator was granted bail on Wednesday by a Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.
Akpan was granted bail pending the outcome of an appeal on health grounds.
His running mate, AIG Asuquo Amba Rtd, said, “His freedom is a prayer answered” as he greeted Akpan and his throng of supporters.
Likewise, the spouse of the Congressperson, Mrs Imaobong Albert while talking noticed that Akwa Ibom has a place with them all and that they reserve an option to pick who they need to oversee them; reassuring her that her husband will make sure that everyone in Akwa Ibom is safe and happy.
In a similar vein, Pastor Sunny Ibuot, Director General, and Sir Emem Akpabio, Chairman of the Campaign Council, urged the public to vote for OBA on Election Day to ensure that God’s will is carried out.
His wife, Pastor Mrs. Imaobong Bassey Albert, his running mate, AIG Amba, and the leadership of the YPP in Akwa Ibom were present to receive Senator Akpan.
