Afenifere, a Pan-Yoruba political and social group, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to make sure that elections scheduled for February and March 2023 take place.

Goldennewsng reports that a statement from Jare Ajayi, Afenifere’s national publicity secretary, was released on Tuesday.

According to the organization, every effort must be made to ensure that the February and March general elections not only take place successfully but also that the winners emerge on May 29, 2023, as required by applicable laws.

According to the PUNCH, Afenifere’s response followed the threat made by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu that the seemingly unabated insecurity may have a negative impact on the much-anticipated general election this year.

“But we feel that there is the need to let anyone thinking of postponing or canceling the elections that such a thing is and will remain unacceptable, regardless of the reason,” Afenifere stated. We recall that there was also insecurity in 2015, to the point where Boko Haram terrorists controlled some local government areas, specifically in Borno State. Yet there were elections. In addition, there was unrest in 2019, and elections were not halted.

“Afenifere felt the need to issue this warning so that anyone considering delaying or altering the election schedule would be aware that such a move would not be tolerated.

Kite flying is a popular pastime in Nigeria. These kites typically refer to actions or policies that were generally not in the public’s best interests in Nigeria. As a result, it’s critical to make this cautionary note crystal clear and without ambiguity. We are making it abundantly clear that Nigerians are ready for the elections, just as the entire world is waiting for them. Ajayi stated, “The schedule should not be altered, postponed, or cancelled in any way.”
