How to Train Yourself for JAMB CBT Exam

How to Learn Computer-Based Test (CBT) by Yourself

Computer-Based Test (CBT) is gradually becoming the norm for many exams, including JAMB, post UTME, and job aptitude tests. CBT is an efficient and cost-effective way to administer tests, and it also eliminates the issue of exam malpractice. As a result, it’s essential for candidates to be familiar with the CBT environment and to train themselves on how to use computers for exams. In this article, we will discuss how to learn CBT by yourself.

Facilities Needed For CBT Self-Training

Before we begin, let’s outline the facilities needed for CBT self-training. They include:

  1. A laptop or desktop computer
  2. Mouse and Touchpad, Keyboard
  3. CBT Software
  4. Access to the Internet (If no CBT Software)

In the following sections, we will discuss each of these items in detail.

  1. A Laptop or Desktop Computer

CBT is conducted with a desktop or laptop computer. For self-help training, you don’t need to look around for both laptop and desktop. You only need one. However, it is recommended to use a laptop because during the actual exam, you may be presented with a laptop instead of a desktop. If you learn with a desktop, you may not be able to use the touchpad, which is commonly used with laptops. However, if you practice with a laptop, you may not be used to a mouse, which is commonly used with desktops.

  1. Mouse and Touchpad, Keyboard

If you get a laptop, it already has a touchpad, but you need to get a mouse with your laptop. This way, you will be able to use both the touchpad and mouse to practice. Whether you use a laptop or desktop, you’re sure to have a keyboard attached. In a CBT test, you could need the keyboard to enter your applicant number, form number, or registration number as the case might be.

  1. CBT Software

CBT software for JAMB or other exams is available online. You can download some for free and use them for free. Although the free version may be limited to a few weeks or a number of users, you will still be allowed to practice with them. If you must gain access to more resources, such as more questions, you may have to pay for access keys or registration licenses, which do not cost much. You can do your search online for some of these software.

  1. Access to the Internet (If no CBT Software)

If you can’t afford to buy or download any software, you can practice live online. This will require you to get your computer connected to the internet before you can use such online platforms. Using paid software does not require the internet to use. If you choose this method, Simbibot is a recommended online resourceful platform where you have access to questions on several subjects/topics to practice with.

Activities Involved in the Computer-Based Test (UTME)

Once you have all the facilities outlined above, the next step is to learn how to use your mouse and keyboard for CBT. Here are some activities involved in the computer-based test:

  1. Using Keyboard for CBT

During the actual exam, you’ll need the keyboard to enter your registration number or candidate’s identification number, which is your UTME registration number for JAMB. Hence, the few keys you should master here are 1 to 0 keys (these are called numeric keys) and the two alphabets at the front of your registration number. Once you enter your UTME registration number, hit the enter key on the keyboard or click on “Login or Enter to Start Exams.” If you make a mistake while entering your registration number

  1. Mouse and Touchpad, Keyboard

If you get a laptop, that already has a touchpad. Yet, you need to get a mouse with your laptop. In this case, you will be able to use both the touchpad and mouse to practice. Therefore, if you’re presented with a desktop, you’re on, and if a laptop, it’s perfect.

Whether you use a laptop or desktop, you’re sure to have a keyboard attached. In a CBT test, you could need the keyboard to enter your applicant number, form number or registration number as the case might be.

That could be all you would need the keyboard for especially if the questions are multiple tests. A keyboard may be more needed if you have to do more than that such as typing a report or so. Luckily in the UTME, you ONLY need the keyboard to enter your UTME/JAMB registration number before you can start your exams.

  1. Using the Mouse for CBT

If you’re using a desktop, you’ll need to use a mouse to navigate through the exam. However, if you’re using a laptop, you can use the touchpad or an external mouse, whichever you’re comfortable with.

Some of the tasks you’ll need to perform with the mouse during the exam include:

  • Clicking on the “Next” button to move to the next question.
  • Selecting options by clicking on radio buttons or checkboxes.
  • Scrolling up and down to view the entire question and options.

It’s important to note that you should practice using the mouse to ensure you’re comfortable with its functionality before the exam.

  1. Time Management

Time management is crucial in a CBT exam as you’re given a fixed amount of time to complete the questions. In the case of UTME, you’re given 2 hours to answer 180 questions. That’s about 40 seconds per question.

To manage your time properly, you should aim to answer each question within 30 seconds and keep an eye on the timer on your screen. If you’re unsure of a question, don’t spend too much time on it. Instead, move on to the next one and come back to it later if you have time.

  1. Reviewing Your Answers

Once you’ve answered all the questions, you’ll have the opportunity to review your answers before submitting. It’s important to use this time to check for any errors or questions you may have skipped.

You can navigate back and forth through the questions using the “Previous” and “Next” buttons, and make any necessary changes. Once you’re satisfied with your answers, click on the “Submit” button to submit your exam.

In conclusion, with the increasing use of computer-based exams for admission and employment purposes, it’s important to be computer literate and proficient in using a computer for exams. With the facilities outlined in this guide and regular practice, you can become proficient in taking CBT exams and increase your chances of success.
