Universities Accepting 150 to180 Cut-Off Mark for Nursing

After the release of UTME results, the majority of the conversations I had with students were centered around the challenge of obtaining a high score for Nursing. Specifically, students who had scored between 150 and 180 were inquiring about the feasibility of studying Nursing Science with their results.

This brings up an important question: Is it possible to gain admission into a university offering Nursing with a score ranging from 150 to 180, or any score in between? Alternatively, should you search for less competitive universities that accept lower JAMB scores, or stick with your current university that typically requires a score of 200 or above?

In this post, we will explore the likelihood of gaining admission into a Nursing program with a lower JAMB score and identify institutions that may accept scores below 200.

Admission into Nursing Programs in Some Nigerian Universities Requires 200 and Above

It is important to note that virtually all Nigerian universities offering Nursing programs require a minimum JAMB score of 200. This requirement is clearly stated in their post-UTME and screening advertisements.

If you are seeking admission into universities such as OAU, UNILAG, UNILORIN, UNIBEN, FUOYE, LASU, EKSU, and others known for their high cut-off marks, you may find it challenging to gain admission with a score below 200. Even with the help of a lecturer or other individuals, the Department of Nursing in these universities cannot admit students who fall below the required cut-off mark.

However, there are other universities that may accept scores below 200. In the next section of this post, we will explore some of these universities and the possibility of gaining admission into their Nursing programs with a lower JAMB score.

Private Universities in Nigeria That May Consider Lower JAMB Scores for Nursing Admission

Believe it or not, there are a few universities in Nigeria that may consider admission into their Nursing programs with lower JAMB scores ranging from 150 to 190. However, these universities are mostly privately owned.

It is crucial to note that private universities are known to have exorbitant tuition fees. Therefore, if you can afford to pay over a million naira or more in yearly tuition, you may consider enquiring about admission and special consideration from any private university offering Nursing programs.

In this post, we will highlight some of the private universities in Nigeria that may consider lower JAMB scores for admission into their Nursing programs.

Some Schools/Colleges of Nursing Accepting Scores Between 150-200

  1. Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital School of Nursing and its Wesley sibling require a score of 150 or above.
  2. Nigerian Army College of Nursing & Midwifery, Yaba takes 150 or above.
  3. Lagos State Teaching Hospital School of Nursing requires 150 or above.
  4. Oyo State College of Nursing & Midwifery Eleyele also requires 150 or above.

In the past, the Lagos State College of Nursing Igando has been known to require scores of 200 or above.

Basic Nursing/General Nursing Programs

For students who are interested in basic Nursing programs, there is no need to take the JAMB. These schools and colleges will only require SSCE results with a pass in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Students will be required to obtain an entrance form, sit for an exam, and if they pass, proceed to an interview before being offered admission. Basic Nursing programs usually take three years to complete.

Conclusion

Admission into Nursing programs will continue to be competitive. If you are unable to gain admission into a university offering Nursing, there are other options available such as private universities or basic Nursing programs that do not require the JAMB.
