Top 10 Worst Courses to Study In Nigeria

When considering courses to study in Nigeria, it is important to evaluate various factors to make an informed decision. Marketability and personal interest are crucial aspects to consider. However, there are certain courses that are perceived as less desirable due to limited job prospects and low market value within Nigeria. These courses often fall within the arts and sciences faculties. It is important to note that while these courses may not be highly employable in Nigeria, they can still be valuable and lead to successful careers in other countries.

Here are some of the courses that are considered among the least desirable to study in Nigeria:

  1. Geography: Although geography offers career opportunities in surveying, real estate, meteorology, and emergency management, the return on investment for graduates in Nigeria is often low. The limited job prospects and lack of direct monetary value make it less marketable within the country.
  2. Development Studies: This interdisciplinary social science course focuses on political, social, economic, and ecological change, as well as enhancing human welfare. However, the awareness and demand for this course are relatively low in Nigeria, resulting in limited job opportunities and competition with graduates from other disciplines.
  3. Sociology and Anthropology: Sociology studies social interaction patterns and human behavior, while anthropology explores human civilizations. While these courses can be lucrative outside of Nigeria, graduates often struggle to find employment within the country due to limited job options specific to their disciplines.
  4. Archaeology: The study of past human activity through artifacts is known as archaeology. Although it is a fascinating field, Nigeria currently offers limited work prospects for archaeologists. The lack of solid infrastructure and support for archaeological services contributes to its low marketability within the country.
  5. Horticulture: Horticulture involves cultivating plants for food, beauty, and materials. In Nigeria, horticulturists are not highly valued as anyone can engage in cultivation without formal education. The limited demand for ornamental objects and the availability of unskilled farmers further diminishes the marketability of this course.
  6. Crop Science: Crop Science focuses on the selection, development, and production of beneficial crops. While there are opportunities to work in agriculture or start a farm, graduates often face challenges finding employment solely based on their university coursework.
  7. Library and Information Science: This course covers the collection, organization, and protection of information in libraries. In Nigeria, physical libraries are not extensively utilized, and online or digital libraries are preferred. As a result, graduates may struggle to find employment or may need to explore opportunities outside their field.
  8. Physical Education: Despite opportunities for practical application, studying physical education as a course in Nigeria often leads to limited career options beyond teaching. Nigerians tend to prefer becoming their own fitness experts rather than seeking professional assistance, resulting in fewer prospects for physical education graduates.
  9. Animal Science: Animal science focuses on managing the output of farm animals. While there are job opportunities in agriculture, the lack of recognition and expertise within the cattle and animal industries in Nigeria can lead to limited employment prospects for graduates in this field.
  10. CRK/IRK: Islamic Religious Studies and Christian Religious Knowledge/Studies are courses centered around religion. Despite the prevalence of religious activities in Nigeria, graduates of these programs often struggle to find employment opportunities beyond teaching or giving university lectures.

Studying a course with limited employability can have several drawbacks, including difficulty finding relevant work, potential waste of time and money, challenges entering the workforce after graduation, and a lack of confidence in career prospects. However, it is important to remember that individual success can still be achieved in these fields, and marketability may vary in different countries or contexts.
