On Friday, the Supreme Court affirmed Alex Otti’s election as the Governor of Abia state.
Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, reading the lead judgment, held that the appellants failed to prove substantial non-compliance in their appeal. Regarding Otti’s membership, the appellant claimed he wasn’t validly nominated by the Labour Party (LP) at the time of the election.
However, the appellate court ruled that the membership issue is an internal affair and lacks jurisdiction. The apex court criticized the appellants for bringing a frivolous and vexatious appeal, ultimately upholding Otti’s victory with 175,466 votes against Okey Ahiwe of the PDP, who secured 88,529 votes in the election last year.
