Activist Olamide Thomas Remanded Over Social Media Comments Against Seyi Tinubu and Others.

GoldenNewsNg gathered that a Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of activist Olamide Thomas in prison over allegations of cyberbullying and making threats against prominent figures, including Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.

Court Rejects Oral Bail Application

Justice Emeka Nwite, presiding over the case, rejected an oral bail application from Thomas’s legal counsel, instructing them to file a formal application for her bail. Thomas, who pleaded not guilty to the three charges against her, is accused of cyberbullying under the Cybercrimes Act.

Allegations Against Thomas

The police claim Thomas made threatening remarks in a Facebook video, including a statement that Seyi Tinubu would die within the year. She is also accused of threatening the children of the Police Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and making derogatory remarks about the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Background of the Arrest

Thomas was initially arrested on October 20, 2024, during the #EndSARS anniversary rally at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos. Following her release, she allegedly posted the contentious video online. On December 13, she was rearrested in Lagos and later arraigned in Abuja.

Case Adjourned

The court has adjourned the case to December 30, 2024, for trial. Thomas will remain in custody unless her lawyer successfully files and secures her release through a formal bail application.

Public Reactions and Legal Insights

The incident has stirred discussions on social media and among legal experts. The charges against Thomas highlight the provisions of the Cybercrimes Act, which prohibit online harassment and threats.

In a related development, legal analyst Bisi Afolabi recently commented on Seyi Tinubu’s rumored political ambitions. Afolabi noted that while Seyi has the legal right to contest for political office, public sentiment could play a significant role in determining his success, referencing similar cases in Nigerian political history.

The case has drawn attention to the balance between freedom of expression and the consequences of online conduct in the digital age.
