The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 in penalties to advance to the African Cup of Nations finals.
The crucial penalty was secured after African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, was brought down in the box by Mothobi Mvala of South Africa at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, Ivory Coast. Leading 1-0 in the 67th minute, Nigeria extended their lead when Captain William Troost-Ekong converted a low-driven penalty past Ronwen Williams in goal.
Although Nigeria initially thought they had a 2-0 lead with Osimhen’s goal, a VAR review overturned the decision due to a foul in the build-up play, resulting in a penalty for South Africa. Bafana Bafana equalized 1-1 from the spot when Teboho Mokoena scored past Stanley Nwabili. Despite South Africa having the opportunity to win, Nigeria ultimately triumphed 4-2 in penalties after Nwabali saved two spot-kicks.
This victory propels the Super Eagles into the final as they aim to secure another AFCON trophy and will be facing cote divoire in the final
