Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface, a key player for the Super Eagles, will miss the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, starting on January 16, due to a groin injury. The setback forced him to sit out a recent test game against Al Gharbia and the subsequent defeat to the Syli Nationale of Guinea.

Following a scan, it has been revealed that Boniface is expected to be sidelined for six weeks. He will be returning to Germany for treatment to address the groin injury. Despite the disappointment, the 23-year-old has conveyed his best wishes to his teammates for success in the tournament, suggesting his acceptance of the situation.

“Good luck guys… Wish you all the best at afcon,” he posted on Instagram on Monday.

In light of Victor Boniface’s unfortunate injury, it is anticipated that the Nigeria Football Federation will soon announce his replacement for the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. The former Saint Union Gelloise forward’s absence is a setback for the Super Eagles, especially considering his promising partnership with Napoli star Victor Osimhen. Boniface had made a significant impact at Bay Arena, tallying 10 goals and providing seven assists.

This setback compounds the challenges for the Nigerian team, already facing the absence of midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who withdrew from the tournament due to a muscle injury sidelining him for three months. Ndidi has been replaced by Royal Antwerp player Alhassan Yusuf as the team aims for its fourth African Cup of Nations title.
