The program aims to engage with the built environment as an interpretive and alterable world.

  • Supporting Community Engagement: Building Beyond supports practices that engage with the relational worlds of communities and public space, fostering conversations on resilience, humanity, and creativity in urban environments.
  • Program Structure: The programme brings together 12 experienced creatives with approximately 7-15 years of relevant professional experience. Supported by four mentors, the cohort engages in peer group sessions, guest speaker sessions, and two in-person Lab Weeks—one in an African country and one in the Netherlands.
  • Group Projects: Participants work on two group projects during the programme—a public-facing event opportunity and a collective publication.

Award and Eligibility

  • Award: Each participant receives an award of €10,000 and guidance from mentors to work on the concept for a body of work outlined in their application.
  • Eligibility: They invite applications from individual, experienced artists and cultural practitioners who:
    • Are from, live and work in eligible countries in Africa.
    • Have ±7-15 years of relevant professional experience in fields related to architecture, design, spatial practice, public space, and urban communities.
    • Hold an individual artistic practice, appreciating interdisciplinary approaches.

Application Details

  • Deadline: Submissions are due by 14 May 2024 at 17.00 Amsterdam time.
  • Application Process: Interested applicants can apply through the official website of Building Beyond Mentorship.
