Staged protest against hike in fuel and electricity tariffs in Kano State on Tuesday was halted by Armed Policemen
The armed policemen, who stormed the farm centre area as early as 9am, took over the area in order to ensure that no protest would hold.
The planned protest, led by a civil society organisation, Joint Action Forum, started as a rally in front of the premises of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, but had to be cancelled.
However, in a statement titled, ‘Our Demands,’ signed by the forum’s Chairman and Secretary, Dr Musa Bashir, and Abba Ahmed, respectively, the group summoned on the Federal Government to rescind the price of fuel from N160 to the 2012 price of N86.
The group also asked for the change in the increase of electricity tariff and the rate of Value Added Tax.
“We are demanding the immediate and unconditional reversal of the hike in petrol price from the current N160 to N86.50 price of 2012, and reversal of the increase in electricity tariffs and VAT.
“The government has the responsibility to make our refineries work and build new ones in order to ensure availability of petroleum products at cheaper and affordable prices”.
