Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla was born on December 20, 1968, in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State. His educational journey started at the NMS Zaria, where he obtained the West African School Certificate in June 1987. Notably, he graduated as the ‘Best Boy’ in Sciences, showcasing his early academic prowess.

Ogalla’s pursuit of knowledge led him to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a member of the 39 RC NDA. He graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and was awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour as the best naval cadet in his course. This recognition speaks to his dedication and exceptional performance.

Throughout his career, he has served on several ships, including NNS AMBE, ARADU, LANA, EKUN, AGU, QUORRA, BEECROFT, DELTA, and PATHFINDER. Noteworthy is his participation in the ECOMOG Operations in Liberia in 1996 while serving on board NNS EKUN. Additionally, as the Base operations officer in NNS PATHFINDER, he excelled in coordinating anti-illegal bunkering operations and overall policing duties within the base.

Rear Admiral Ogalla’s contributions extend beyond his service on various ships. He has held significant positions such as Instructor, CI, and Comdt NNHS (Nigerian Navy Hydrographic School), as well as other roles within the Nigerian Navy. In these positions, he made substantial strides in the field of geodesy, datum conversion, tidal predictions and analysis, satellite surveying, and bathymetry, among other areas.

As Comdt, he facilitated a beneficial collaboration between the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic School and Teledyn Marines, a reputable OEM in the United States. This partnership resulted in the procurement of state-of-the-art survey equipment, which significantly enhanced practical training. Moreover, he played a pivotal role in aligning the School’s curriculum with the requirements of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).

During his tenure at the Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Office (NNHO), Rear Admiral Ogalla actively contributed to the localization of tidal prediction and analysis, furthering the office’s capabilities. He also made valuable contributions to the Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem survey sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2004.

At the Nigerian Defence College (NDC), he played an instrumental role in improving the college’s research package and led the participants’ research study tour to China and South Korea in 2018. In his capacity as DLL (Director Lessons Learnt), he focused on analyzing previous Navy operations and activities, extracting valuable lessons for doctrinal and operational enhancements.

Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla is an active member of esteemed professional associations, including the Nigerian Hydrographic Society and the Nigerian Institute of Management.
