The political atmosphere in Rivers State remains tense following the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, whose whereabouts are still unknown days after President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month emergency rule imposed on the state.

GoldenNewsNg earlier reported that the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (rtd.), formally handed over power to Governor Fubara on Thursday. In his farewell broadcast, Ibas urged Rivers people to support the governor as he resumes office.

However, uncertainty continues to mount as Fubara has yet to make a public appearance in Port Harcourt, sparking speculation and raising concerns about governance in the oil-rich state.

Arise Television’s correspondent in Rivers State, Friday Olokor, confirmed on Thursday that while the state capital remains calm, “the absence of the governor has created a vacuum in governance,” leaving residents anxious.

“The atmosphere is calm, there is no problem. But the whereabouts of the governor is still not known, even though there is speculation he might arrive today,” Olokor said.

He added that the state’s House of Assembly remains divided, with rival factions holding separate meetings. The political split has stalled legislative business, creating further challenges for residents.

Olokor cautioned that continued political antagonism could worsen the state’s fragile stability. He urged lawmakers from both sides to reconcile, warning that “where two elephants fight, it is the ground that suffers.”

Residents, civil society groups, and stakeholders are now calling for clarity from the state government to prevent the situation from degenerating into another prolonged crisis.
