As issues surrounding the rape and sexual abuse of young girls continue to generate attention, the Nigerian Police Force Lagos state chapter has released a public relations information asking members of the public to report gender based violence for immediate investigation.

It was Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham that announced the news on her Instagram handle after joining in the #justiceforUwa campaign. Within a week more than two girls were reportedly raped and brutally murdered by yet to be identified men in different parts of the country but the Nigerian police is yet to get the culprit.

The prevailing corona virus pandemic helped to suppress mass demonstration which could have taken place in the country following reports of the heinous acts. People have been able to express their displeasure on social media alone but no one is certain if the appropriate authorities like the Nigerian police have taken up the matter.

Uwa’s case was more provocative because the atrocity was committed in a church. The victim was said to have bee attacked and raped inside the church. Cues at the crime scene suggest that she was gang raped and her head was smashed with fire extinguishers found in the church.
