The 28 year old will compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero for the number one jersey at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard confirmed that former teammate and technical / performance adviser, Petr Cech, was instrumental in the deal. Interestingly, the former Czech stopper also made the move from Rennes in 2004.
The Senegalese kept nine clean sheets in 24 appearances for Rennes last season on their way to finishing third and qualifying for the champions league – the first time in their history.
Speaking to the club’s in-house channel, Mendy said, “I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my teammates and can’t wait to get started.”
