Luckily, many organizations have the tradition of closing for the year towards the end of December Nevertheless, for those whose companies never close, there are also days declared by the government as public holidays to enable them to share the festive moments with their loved ones.

List of Public Holidays FG Will Declare in December 2024 and January 2025

December 25: Christmas Day

The first public holiday will be observed on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, for Christmas. This day marks the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, a significant event for Christians worldwide. It is a time for family gatherings, church services, and festive celebrations.

December 26: Boxing Day

The following day, Thursday, December 26, 2024, will be a public holiday for Boxing Day. Traditionally observed in Great Britain and other Commonwealth nations, Boxing Day is a time for sharing gifts and spending quality time with family and friends.

January 1: New Year’s Day

To kick off the new year, Wednesday, January 1, 2025, will be declared a public holiday to celebrate New Year’s Day. It is a day for reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the year ahead, often marked by festive events and celebrations.

These holidays provide a well-deserved break for Nigerians, allowing them to unwind, recharge, and create lasting memories with family and friends.

Seasonal Work Closures

Many organizations in Nigeria traditionally close for the year in mid-December, giving employees a chance to enjoy an extended holiday period. For those who continue to work through the festive season, these public holidays offer valuable moments to join in the celebrations.

Isese Day Observance

In a related development, some states in Southwest Nigeria have declared additional public holidays to celebrate Isese Day, which honors the Yoruba culture and traditions. While this is not a nationwide holiday, more states are expected to adopt it in 2025.

These public holidays serve as a reminder of the importance of family, tradition, and cultural celebrations, making December and January special months for all Nigerians.
