Controversial Social Media Personality Bobrisky Sentenced to Jail for Naira Abuse
Controversial figure Bobrisky, known for his presence on social media, has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine for the abuse of the Nigerian currency, the naira.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos, who emphasized that the sentence serves as a deterrent to others who engage in similar acts of abusing and mutilating the naira.
During the sentencing, the judge questioned Bobrisky about his gender, to which he promptly responded that he identifies as a man. Consequently, he was ordered to serve his jail term at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.
Justice Awogboro specified that the jail term would commence from March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.
Bobrisky was convicted on April 5, after pleading guilty to four counts of naira abuse filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The sentencing was originally scheduled for last Thursday but was postponed due to the Federal Government’s declaration of a public holiday for the Eid-El-Fitri celebration.
The charges against Bobrisky include instances of tampering with naira notes during social events, with specific incidents cited at various locations. These actions are in violation of section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.
The judgment against Bobrisky underscores the seriousness with which the abuse of the national currency is viewed, and serves as a reminder of the legal consequences for such actions.
