Covid-19: Rivers State To Re-open Schools on October 5

The Rivers State government has approved Monday October, 5th 2020 for the re-opening of all schools in the State, with the exception of Primary education.

The decision was reached in a meeting presided over by the governor, Nyesom Wike, as well as the State Executive Council on Friday, at the government house.

Prof Kaniye Ebeku, Commissioner for Education, made this known to reporters after the emergency meeting. He noted that primary schools was excluded from the list.

“The council approved that schools in the State Re-open on the 5th of October 2020 with only the following schools – All secondary schools in the state, vocational schools in the state, universities and other tertiary institutions.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the council based on expert medical advice did not approve the re-opening of primary schools in the state, which would await a new date in the future.”

A seven man taskforce committee was also set up to monitor and enforce the compliance of Covid-19 protocols in the various schools.

  • They did not exclude reopening of primary schools. The decision to leave them out for now, was based solely on medical advice. A later date will be approved down the line for their resumption.
