Dangote Refinery Cuts Petrol Price, Begins Free Direct Supply to 11 States September 15

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a further reduction in petrol prices and confirmed that it will commence free direct supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to select states beginning Monday, September 15, 2025.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the company disclosed that petrol will be supplied directly to 11 states at varying retail pump prices. Consumers in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti will purchase at ₦841 per litre, while Abuja, Delta, Rivers, Edo, and Kwara will access the product at ₦851 per litre. The refinery set its gantry price at ₦820 per litre.

To ease distribution challenges, the refinery will also provide free delivery of PMS to registered filling stations in the participating states, with plans to expand the scheme nationwide in the coming months. Station operators have been invited to register to benefit from the programme, which is aimed at strengthening distribution networks, reducing supply disruptions, and reviving dormant petrol stations across the country.

Africa’s largest refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, commenced operations in 2024 to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products. In July 2025, the company received 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks under a ₦720 billion programme to distribute 65 million litres of refined products daily, save the country more than ₦1.7 trillion annually in energy costs, and generate over 15,000 jobs.

The nationwide rollout of direct supply, initially scheduled for August 15, was postponed to September 15 due to disruptions in the petroleum sector. Earlier this month, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) issued a three-day ultimatum over market fairness concerns, while the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) embarked on a two-day strike.

The disputes were resolved after the Department of State Services (DSS) convened a meeting between the refinery’s management, labour leaders, and government representatives. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed, securing agreements on unionization, workers’ protection, and fair competition in the downstream sector.

With its latest price cut and distribution plan, the Dangote Refinery is seen as taking a significant step toward stabilizing Nigeria’s fuel supply chain and advancing the country’s energy security ambitions. Industry stakeholders expect more states to be included in the scheme in the coming weeks.
