Following the race for operation takeover from Tinubu 2027, Peter Obi has submitted his one-term proposal to coalition for consideration

GoldenNewsNg reports that the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, has confirmed that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally presented his proposal to serve only one term if elected in 2027.

Tanko revealed that the proposal has been submitted to the newly formed opposition coalition for consideration.

This comes after Obi, on Monday, publicly stated his readiness to serve a single four-year term if Nigerians elect him president in the next general election. He explained that any candidate from the South must be willing to leave office by May 29, 2031, in line with Nigeria’s long-standing, though unwritten, zoning and power rotation principles.

Obi’s statement aligns with the opposition’s broader strategy ahead of the 2027 election, where a growing coalition of political heavyweights seeks to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The coalition, which includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday as its political platform for the 2027 contest.

Speaking on Obi’s proposal, Tanko said:

“We have presented it to the coalition. It is there for them to make a decision. But we are confident it can work. This is a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Peter Obi embodies that. What Nigeria needs now are leaders with integrity.”

While the Nigerian constitution permits a maximum of two presidential terms, Obi’s offer of a single term is a political commitment rather than a legal requirement. According to Tanko, Obi believes four years is sufficient to implement the transformational policies Nigeria urgently needs.

“He’s not just offering a term he’s offering results. That’s the message,” Tanko added.

As discussions deepen within the coalition, Obi’s one-term pledge could become a defining element of a broader strategy aimed at gaining national consensus and rebuilding trust in governance.
