Doyin Okupe, a former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for a reason.

Goldennewsng reports that Okupe was taken into custody on Thursday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Punch reported that the EFCC claimed Okupe was detained because he was on its watchlist for 2016. The anti-corruption organization stated that it is attempting to update the list and remove Okupe’s name.

Punch was informed by an excellent EFCC source that Okupe had been on the EFCC watchlist since 2016 for approximately six years.

Dr. Okupe is one of the people, groups, or organizations that needed to be closely watched because of the law. Since 2016, we have been keeping an eye on him.

In an interview with Punch, the anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the report and stated that the EFCC would immediately remove the former presidential aide from its watchlist in response to Okupe’s arrest by the DSS and subsequent transfer to the EFFC.

“Concerning the interception of Doyin Okupe;” Uwujaren said. The DSS informed the Commission today, January 12, of the interception of Dr. Okupe, a former presidential adviser, at the Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

“The Service responded to a watchlist request made on July 18, 2016, more than six years prior to his most recent conviction by the Federal High Court, Abuja, on charges of money laundering.

Before his interception, “the Commission was in the process of formally lifting the watch list, and will expedite action in this regard.”
