Minister Bosun Tijani Denies Involvement in Network Disruptions Amidst Nationwide Protests

The Minister of Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has denied allegations that he instructed telecommunications companies to disrupt network services amid ongoing nationwide protests. Nigerians using major networks like MTN and Airtel reported experiencing unusually slow internet speeds, leading to speculation that the government might be interfering with the networks to hinder the protests.

Speaking on Channels TV, Tijani clarified the situation, stating, “There’s no instruction to tamper with (phone) networks.” He also expressed concern over the recent looting of the National Communication Commission (NCC) building in Kano State, describing it as a significant setback to the government’s efforts to promote youth employment through technology.

IGP Kayode Egbetokun Reports Death and Injuries Among Police During Protests

In related news, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed that a police officer was killed during the #EndBadGovernance protests, which turned violent in several locations across the country. During a press conference in Abuja, Egbetokun disclosed that some officers sustained injuries inflicted by individuals posing as protesters.

The police chief expressed his sorrow over the destruction of multiple police stations by rioters, describing the events as more of a “mass uprising and looting” than peaceful protests. Egbetokun noted that despite prior warnings, the organizers of the protests were noticeably absent, allowing the demonstrations to be taken over by miscreants.

“In places like FCT, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, among others, we recorded incidents of unprovoked attacks on our security personnel, where one policeman has been reported murdered and others seriously injured,” the IGP said.

In response to these developments, the Nigeria Police Force has placed all units on high alert, fully mobilized and prepared to act swiftly to maintain public safety and order.
