Federal Government Officially Flags Off TVET Empowerment Program for Over 30,000 Nigerian

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially flagged off the TVET Empowerment Program 2025, a nationwide skills development initiative that kicked off with entrance examinations conducted by the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) on Saturday. The exam saw the participation of over 30,000 students from across the 36 states and the FCT.

This entrance exam marks the beginning of a fully funded, practical training program aimed at equipping Nigerian youth with real-world technical and vocational skills to tackle unemployment, reduce dependence on foreign artisans, and promote economic self-reliance.

What Is the TVET Empowerment All About?

According to NABTEB Registrar Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, this program is a strategic move to build a skilled, self-sufficient Nigerian workforce.

“This is a new era for Nigeria,” he said. “With this empowerment program, we are raising a generation of problem solvers. The real question is no longer who has a degree, but who has the skills to deliver.”

The training targets high-demand trades such as:

  • Electrical Installation

  • POP Design & Tiling

  • Tailoring & Fashion

  • Solar Maintenance

  • Auto Mechanics

  • Carpentry & Welding

Who Is Eligible, and What’s Next?

More than 30,000 applicants wrote the exam, but selection will focus on aptitude and interest, not just raw scores. The goal is to match every student to the skill area best suited to them, based on assessments conducted during the exam process.

What to Expect After the Exam:

✅ Results announced in 3 weeks
✅ Candidates matched to appropriate technical trades
✅ 6 to 12 months of practical training
✅ Free starter packs (tools & materials) after training
✅ Access to business loans or entry into federal job pipelines

Why the TVET Program Matters Now

The FG’s decision to scale up the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector comes at a critical time when Nigeria is grappling with high unemployment and increased outsourcing of labor-intensive projects to foreign workers.

This empowerment initiative seeks to reverse that trend by producing certified, job-ready Nigerian youth who can take up roles in both the private and public sectors.

“We can’t grow this economy without welders, plumbers, electricians, and technicians,” said Dr. Mohammed. “The future is in our hands — literally.”

Major Highlights of the TVET Empowerment Scheme

Fully Funded Training
Certification from NABTEB
Starter Packs for All Graduates
Business Loan Support
Training in all 36 States + FCT
Plans for Full Digitization by 2026
