What is the NBTE and Its Role in TVET?

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) is a government agency under the Federal Ministry of Education responsible for regulating Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Nigeria. Established by Act No. 9 of January 11, 1977, NBTE plays a crucial role in developing skilled manpower to support Nigeria’s National Development Plans.

Who Can Apply for TVET Accreditation?

The Federal Government is calling on:

  • Vocational Enterprise Institutions (VEIs)

Accreditation will enable these institutions and individuals to receive government funding to train candidates under the TVET Program.

  • Must adopt National Skills Qualification (NSQ)-Based Curricula.

  • Must maintain a 1:40 instructor-to-student ratio.
  • Each trade must have a Quality Assurance Assessor (QAA).
  • Must have an Internal Quality Assurance Manager (IQAM) or engage a part-time personnel if necessary.

2. Skill Training Centres (STCs)

  • Must be CAC-registered.
  • Must implement NSQ-Based Curricula.
  • Each program requires a qualified instructor or a senior artisan with at least NSQ Level 3 certification.
  • Must have at least one QAA.
  • Must have one certified IQAM or engage part-time personnel if needed.

3. Mastercraft Persons (MCPs)

  • Must have either CAC registration or a National Identification Number (NIN).
  • Must adopt NSQ-Based Curricula.
  • Must have at least one qualified instructor or an experienced artisan with NSQ Level 3 certification.
  • Training facilities must include workshops and restrooms.
  • Must have records of past training programs and certifications awarded.
