Ogbonnaya Onu, a former Minister of Science and Technology during the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, has passed away.
Mr. Onu died at the age of 73, as confirmed by a statement from the family spokesperson, Uzoma Onu.
According to reliable sources, the late politician fell ill following the 2023 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary and sought treatment abroad for a duration of six months.
Before the 2023 general election, he was among the presidential aspirants representing the ruling party.
The first civilian governor of Abia State reportedly succumbed to cancer of the throat after a courageous battle, while receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Nigeria.
In 1999, Onu emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Party (APP), which later evolved into the All Nigerian Progressives Party (ANPP).
During the merger of both parties, he graciously stepped down for Olu Falae, who became the joint candidate of the APP and Alliance for Democracy (AD).
