“There is no self made man” so says an old saying quoted by a success and motivational preacher John Mason. That is exactly what played out when popular comedian and acclaimed father of stand-up comedy in Nigeria Alibaba told his fans on Instagram that it was a popular musician know as Lagbaja that help set the ball rolling for stand up comedy in Nigeria.
Alibaba narrated how he met Lagbaja at a mechanic shop and they discussed about a show that Lagbaja was holding in Lagos. Lagbaja invited Alibaba to perform his comedy at the show and he accepted. According to him, that was the start of what people now know today as stand-up comedy in Nigeria.
His style as explained to him by Lagbaja was to “yab the people” who were mainly working class and wealthy people that often throng Lagbaja’s performances in Lagos. Many of Alibaba’s fans saw his appreciation to Lagbaja as a sign of humility for not taking the glory for the success of stand-up comedy in Nigeria.
Alibaba “The history of the commercial success of stand up comedy can’t be written without mentioning the role this man, @official Lagbaja played in its, process, development and activating the cash“.
