It honors the legacy of Lorenzo Natali, the former Vice-President of the European Commission, who was a fervent advocate for European development policies.

Overview

Established in 1992, the Lorenzo Natali Prize has highlighted critical global issues through journalism.

It acknowledges journalists who uncover the human impact of pressing topics such as climate change, digital infrastructure, gender equality, human development, employment, peace, governance, and human rights.

The 2024 edition continues this tradition, inviting journalists to submit their compelling stories.

Categories

The Lorenzo Natali Prize 2024 includes several categories, each celebrating different aspects of journalism:

  • Best Emerging Journalist Award: This category is for journalists aged between 18 and 25 at the time of submission. The reporting must be published by a media outlet based in an eligible country. The winner will receive a EUR 10,000 prize and a unique training opportunity to develop high-quality journalism skills.
  • Investigative Journalism Award: This category honors investigative reporting that exposes serious issues such as crimes, injustice, corruption, or corporate misconduct. The reporting must be published by a media outlet in an eligible country. The winner will receive a EUR 10,000 prize.
  • Feature Journalism Award: This category is for feature stories published by a media outlet in an eligible country. The reporting should aim to entertain, educate, engage, or inform the audience, taking an in-depth look at current events, situations, individuals, or groups, and addressing innovations and solutions to contemporary challenges. The winner will receive a EUR 10,000 prize.
  • Special Award – Photojournalism: This category recognizes the impact of visual storytelling. Entries must consist of single photographs published by a media outlet in an eligible country. The winner will receive a EUR 10,000 prize.

Benefits

Winners of each category will receive a prize of EUR 10,000. Additionally, the winner of the Best Emerging Journalist category will be offered an exciting work experience placement or traineeship with a media partner.

The winners will be celebrated at the Lorenzo Natali Prize Award Ceremony in Brussels later in 2024.

Eligibility

To participate in the Lorenzo Natali Prize 2024, applicants must:

  • Be journalists.
  • Submit entries in any language, accompanied by a translation into one of the competition languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, or German.
  • Submit entries in various formats, including written articles, audio-visual content, or multimedia presentations.
