Section 46 of the Police Act CAP 359 of 1968: Formation of the Supernumerary Police

The Supernumerary Police in Nigeria was established by Section 46 of the Police Act CAP 359 of 1968, amended by Section 418 of the Police Act CAP 359 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1990. According to this act, individuals, including government entities, seeking the assistance of Spy Police for the security of their property can apply to the Inspector-General of Police of the Federation or State Commissioner of Police. The application must include relevant details about the company and any other specifications requested by the Inspector-General.

Qualification Requirements for Joining Spy Police

To be eligible for joining the Nigerian Supernumerary Police, specific qualification requirements must be met. These conditions include:

  1. Nigerian Nationality: Applicants must be Nigerian citizens.
  2. Good Moral Character: Aspiring officers must have a clean criminal background and be respectable citizens.
  3. Minimal Academic Qualification: A secondary school diploma is typically required.
  4. Age Limit: Applicants should be between 18 and 35 years old.
  5. Height Requirement: Male candidates must be at least 1.67 meters tall, while female candidates must be at least 1.64 meters tall.
  6. No Tattoos: Candidates should not have any visible tattoos on their bodies.
  7. Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is essential.
  8. Driving Skill (Optional): While not mandatory, having driving skills is beneficial.
  9. Willingness to Reside in Lagos: Candidates should be prepared to reside in Lagos for the duration of their training.

Step-by-Step Guide to Joining Nigeria’s Supernumerary (Spy) Police in 2025

  1. Obtain the Spy Police Application Form: Interested candidates can obtain the application form for Supernumerary (Spy) Police recruitment at the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos. Ensure that the form is correctly completed and all required documents are attached in the specified order.
  2. Participate in Physical and Medical Examinations: After submitting the application, candidates will undergo physical and medical assessments to evaluate their overall health and physical fitness. Regular exercise is advisable, and candidates must provide a genuine medical report from a reputable hospital.
  3. Provide All Required Documents: Candidates must submit relevant documents to the Police Training School in Ikeja for verification. These documents include:
    • Two copies of the company letter headed paper
    • Photocopy of the CAC document of the company
    • 10 passport photographs for documentation
    • Academic credentials, including the NYSC certificate
    • A valid means of identification (e.g., National ID card, International Passport, Voter’s Card, or Driving License)
    • The required registration fee
  4. Get Your Training Kit: After payment and verification, candidates will receive their training kit, which includes a white police polo, shorts, and a pair of white tennis shoes with white socks. Note that additional charges may be incurred throughout the training, so applicants should be financially prepared.
  5. Undergo Training: Successful applicants will undergo rigorous training at the Police Training School. The training sessions are typically conducted on weekends to accommodate those who work during the week.
  6. Approval as a Spy Police Officer: After completing the training program successfully, candidates will receive notification of their appointment as a Supernumerary (Spy) Police officer in Nigeria. A passing out parade is usually held, during which their rank in the Nigerian Police Force is confirmed. Spy Police Officers will then be assigned to assist regular police officers in various law enforcement activities, including community policing and crime prevention, under an Area command.

Conclusion: An Opportunity to Serve and Protect

Becoming a Supernumerary Police Officer in Nigeria presents an excellent opportunity for individuals to contribute to the security of their communities and the country as a whole. While the application process may be demanding, dedication, preparedness, and determination can lead to a successful career with the Spy Police. Aspiring candidates should stay updated on recruitment announcements and adhere to the Nigeria Police Force’s rules and regulations to embark on this exciting journey of protecting and serving their country. Best wishes as you prepare to join the Supernumerary Police and make a positive impact on your nation’s safety and security.
