In self-isolation, we lost many small but really important joys of life, for example, the opportunity to drink delicious coffee in our favorite cafe. Here you can read about how to brew a delicious coffee at home – without a coffee machine and professional experience
How to make delicious coffee at home?
The very first thing is to buy delicious coffee. It is difficult to advise a specific variety here, because to buy a conventional classical one does not mean to buy good coffee. It is important that the grains are fresh, recently fried. Old or refried grains often give the drink extra bitterness, acidity and impurities of strange tastes like paper or rubber. Therefore, in order not to learn to understand how to evaluate the quality of coffee for a year, you can simply trust local roasters in this matter, try different ones, and experiment.
Now all the countries roasters have online stores, and some of the varieties are sold in chain stores. Second – you need good water. Tap water, even filtered, is not very suitable – in Moscow tap water has a very high hardness, it kills the juiciness of coffee, making it less sweet, less acid and generally makes the taste less intense and pronounced.
How to brew coffee in a Turk
It is better to take coffee not dark roasted, otherwise it will be guaranteed to be bitter. For the Turks they use very fine grinding, which can potentially give bitterness. If coffee is dark roasted, bitterness cannot be avoided. The second important point, which many do not know, is for Turks to use room-temperature water, rather than pouring already hot water. And most importantly – do not spare the coffee. You need to use 1 gram of coffee for every 10 ml of water. That is, for a Turk with a volume of 200 ml, you need 20 grams of coffee.
Step by step recipe:
- 200 ml Turk;
- 20 grams of ground coffee (or 4 part tablespoons). Grinding into powder (very finely);
- water at room temperature.
- Add coffee and water to the turk, mix and put on medium heat. Turn on the stopwatch.
- At 1: 00-1: 30, gently mix again.
- At about 4: 00-4: 30, the foam should rise, as soon as it has risen – the coffee is ready, it is time to pour it into a cup. After another minute, all the coffee particles will settle and can be drunk.
How to brew coffee in a geyser coffee maker
Many people drink geyser, including because they like bitterness. So it’s difficult to help with the choice of coffee. I just think that coffee with high acidity is not suitable for a geyser coffee machine. Because as a result, acidity remains, but most often there is bitterness, so coffee does not turn out delicious.
Step by step recipe:
- geyser coffee maker;
- ground coffee, grinding like salt (a little finer than granulated sugar);
- water about 80 degrees (8-10 minutes after boiling the kettle).
- Completely hammer a basket of coffee: to the top, but not tamping. Pour water so that it only slightly touches the basket, to a metal screw.
- Put on medium heat and close the mocha with a lid so as not to scald.
- As soon as you hear a hissing sound, remove the coffee maker from the heat, cool it under a stream of cold water or put in ice. This will help stop the extraction process (dissolving coffee particles in water), and the coffee will be less bitter.
How to brew coffee in a French press
Any light roasted coffee is suitable for a French press. The most important thing is not to grind it on a coffee grinder with a blade. The French press needs a coarse grinding. Therefore, if there is no millstone grinder at home, it is better to indicate the grinding for a French press when ordering coffee from a roaster – ground coffee will be sent to you. The second important life hack is that you don’t need to press the piston to push all the coffee to the bottom.
Step-by-step recipe for coffee for two:
- French press;
- 35 grams of coffee (6 tablespoons) coarse, slightly larger than cane sugar;
- water temperature 93-96 degrees.
- Pour coffee into a French press, add water and leave for 4 minutes. Do not mix. And do not close the piston (cover) either.
- In the fourth minute, stir the coffee, breaking the crust formed on the surface, so that the particles settle.
- After mixing, the French press should just stand for another five to eight minutes. Still do not need to close it with a lid and lower the filter.
- Only then you need to lower the filter of the French press to the coffee level so that it only touches the surface of the drink. No need to lower the rod to the end and crush the grain. It should fulfill only the function of a filter, without affecting the extraction.
