How To Link NIN To MTN Phone Number  – In order to improve security measures and streamline identity verification processes, in 2023 the Nigerian government gave a directive for citizens to link their National Identification Number (NIN) to their mobile phone numbers by March 1, 2024.

MTN offices in different states in Nigeria have recently been experiencing a deluge of customer visits. This development is partly due to the recent text messages many MTN customers have received asking them to visit an MTN store to link their MTN line with their NIN. The instruction comes with threats to block call and data services on the mobile numbers of customers who do not comply with the directive.

How To Check If Your MTN Number Is Linked With Your NIN

If you used your NIN to register your MTN number, definitely your NIN must have been linked to your MTN number. But you can also follow the steps below to confirm if its actually linked or not.

  1. Visit the MTN check portal at https://nin.mtn.ng/nin/status.
  2. You’ll then need to enter the digits of your MTN line.
  3. When you enter the number, you will receive an OTP, please correctly enter the OTP into the space provided.
  4. After that, you’ll receive a confirmation of your MTN line’s NIN linking status.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Visit the MTN website at https://nin.mtn.ng/nin/
  • Click on “Link NIN”.
  • Select your type (individual, corporate, etc.).
  • Enter your MTN number.
  • Optionally, enter your email address.
  • Enter your NIN.
  • Click “Next” to receive an OTP.
  • Enter OTP to complete the linking.
  • Await response from MTN.

Note: If you do not get a response in 24hours, you may also visit any MTN store or agent to link NIN to your Line.

How to use USSD to link your NIN to your MTN line

So anyone trying to link their MTN line to their NIN without visiting an MTN office can simply do the following:

  • Copy your NIN into clipboard.
  • Dial *996# on your MTN line, an on-screen prompt will be displayed.
  • From the displayed options, select option one.
  • Choose option two from the menu that will be displayed.
  • Now paste in your 11 digit NIN number.
  • Wait for your request to process

After that, you’ll receive a couple of text messages confirming the successful linking of your NIN to your MTN line.

How To Link Your NIN To Your MTN Phone Number After Being Blocked Via SMS

Here are steps to take in order to link your NIN to your MTN phone number through SMS after being blocked:

  • Open the messaging app on your mobile phone.
  • Create a new message.
  • In the body of the message, type “NIN-your 11 digit NIN”
  • Send the message to 996.
  • Wait for response from MTN.

Your message body should be like this; NIN-12345678999. Once, you are done with writing send the message to 996 and it wait for response from MTN. It’s simple right?
