IGP Issues Fresh Order, Reveal How A Police Officer Was Killed, Others Injured During #EndBadGovernance Protests.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed that a police officer was killed and others were injured during the #EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria. The announcement came during a press conference in Abuja, following demonstrations that began peacefully but turned violent in some areas.

Egbetokun expressed deep regret over the incidents, noting that several police stations were destroyed and that officers were attacked by individuals posing as protesters. He described the events as more of a “mass uprising and looting” rather than peaceful protests, highlighting the widespread destruction and chaos.

Despite previous warnings, the IGP pointed out that the protest organizers were notably absent, leaving room for miscreants to take over. As a result, the police force has placed all units on high alert to ensure public safety and maintain order.

“In various states including the FCT, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, we recorded incidents where our security personnel were unprovokedly attacked, resulting in one policeman’s death and others being seriously injured,” Egbetokun stated. He emphasized that the force is fully mobilized and ready to respond to any threats to public safety.

The protests, sparked by frustrations over economic hardship, have spread across the country, including in Kano, Borno, Yobe, and Nasarawa states. The demonstrations have seen vehicles set on fire, warehouses and private stores looted, and clashes with police forces, who used tear gas to disperse crowds. In response, curfews have been enforced in several states.

The nationwide protests, which started on August 1, 2024, and are expected to continue until August 10, have been heavily discussed on social media. Many Nigerians are expressing their anger over the rising prices of food and essential goods, fueled by high inflation and the government’s recent economic policies, including the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of forex windows.

Despite concerns that these protests could escalate to the scale of the EndSARS demonstrations in October 2020, young people across the country remain determined to voice their grievances. The police, military, and the Department of State Services have all issued warnings against the protests, but the movement shows no signs of slowing down.
